Ord is a city located in Valley County, Nebraska, in the United States. In 2020, about 2,113 people lived there. Ord is also the county seat of Valley County, which means it's the main town where the county government is located.

History of Ord

Ord was officially planned and laid out in 1874. It was named after Edward O. C. Ord, a general who fought in the American Civil War.

In 1886, a railway line was built by the Omaha and Republican Valley Railway, which was part of the Union Pacific Railroad. This line connected Grand Island to Ord. Today, this railway is used by the Nebraska Central Railroad. It helps transport farm products from the Valley County area to other places.

In 2010, there were 2,112 people living in Ord. These people lived in 988 different homes, and 565 of these were families.

Community Improvements

Over the past few decades, the people of Ord have worked hard to improve their community. They wanted to make the town a better place to live and attract new residents.

Since 2000, over $125 million has been invested in Ord by both private businesses and the government. This has led to more than 100 new businesses starting and 350 new jobs being created. The number of jobs in Ord is now back to what it was before the economic recession.

The community wants to show people the benefits of living in a small town. They also offer the things needed for new businesses to succeed. Because of these efforts, the population of Ord actually grew between 2010 and 2018.

In 2019, a local business called Scratchtown Brewing Company received a special grant. This grant helped them install solar panels on their roof to create clean energy. Ord continues to try and attract new people while keeping its current residents. The town has even been featured in well-known publications like the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.
