Oregus is a special group, or genus, of beetles. These beetles belong to the Carabidae family. They are unique because they are endemic to New Zealand. This means they are found nowhere else in the world!
Discovering Oregus Beetles
Unique to New Zealand
In 2003, scientists took a very close look at Oregus beetles. They studied both how the beetles looked and their DNA. This careful study helped them understand the different types of Oregus beetles better.
Species of Oregus
Because of this research, scientists found that there are four known species of Oregus beetles. They even identified two new species! One new species, Oregus septentrionalis, was found in the Marlborough area. Another new species, Oregus crypticus, was discovered in North Canterbury.
Here are the four known species of Oregus:
- Oregus aereus (White, 1846)
- Oregus crypticus Pawson, Emberson, Armstrong & Paterson, 2003
- Oregus inaequalis (Castelnau, 1867)
- Oregus septentrionalis Pawson, Emberson, Armstrong & Paterson, 2003
