Orlando D. Franklin (born December 16, 1987) is a former professional American football player. He was an offensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL). Orlando played college football at the University of Miami. The Denver Broncos chose him in the second round of the 2011 NFL draft. He also played for the San Diego Chargers, New Orleans Saints, and Washington Redskins.

Early Life and Growing Up

Orlando Franklin was born in Kingston, Jamaica. When he was three years old, he moved to Toronto, Canada. Later, Orlando and his mother moved to Florida in the United States. There, he played football at Atlantic Community High School in Delray Beach, Florida. He played alongside other future football players like Courtney Robinson and Jayron Hosley.

College Football Journey

Franklin attended the University of Miami from 2007 to 2010. He played in 51 games during his college career. He started 39 of those games. Orlando played both as an offensive tackle and a guard.

Professional Football Career

Playing for the Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos picked Orlando Franklin in the second round of the 2011 NFL draft. He was the 46th player chosen overall. In his first year, Franklin started all 16 games for the Broncos. He continued to be a key player for the team.

In 2012, he started all 16 regular season games. He played as the right tackle. In 2013, Franklin started 15 games. He helped the Broncos reach Super Bowl XLVIII. However, they lost the game to the Seattle Seahawks. He started all 16 games again in 2014.

Time with the San Diego Chargers

On March 10, 2015, Franklin signed a five-year contract. He joined the San Diego Chargers. He played for the Chargers for two years. On May 15, 2017, the Chargers released him from his contract.

Short Stays with Other Teams

On July 27, 2017, Franklin signed with the New Orleans Saints. However, he was released just five days later. Later that year, on October 28, 2017, the Washington Redskins signed him. He was released by the Redskins on November 4. He signed a new contract with the Redskins on January 19, 2018. But he was released again on May 3.

Retirement from Football

Two days after being released by the Redskins, Orlando Franklin announced his retirement. He said his health was a main reason. He also wanted to spend more time with his family, who lived in Denver.

Life After Football

After retiring, Orlando Franklin started hosting a sports radio show. He works for 104.3 The Fan in Denver. In August 2021, he took a coaching job. He worked with the San Francisco 49ers. He worked closely with his father-in-law, Bobby Turner. After one season as a coach, Franklin returned to 104.3 The Fan in June 2022.
