In Oschiri, there is an important church called Nostra Signora di Castro. This church was once a cathedral. A cathedral is the main church of a diocese. A diocese is an area managed by a bishop.

This church was the center of a special church district called the Bishopric of Castro. This district was part of the larger Archdiocese of Sassari.

The history of this bishopric goes back to the Byzantine times, around the year 1000 AD. The first time a bishop from Castro was mentioned was in 1116. This bishop helped dedicate a church called the Basilica di Saccargia.

Later, in 1164, a bishop named Atto dedicated another church in a place called Aneleto. The next year, he gave this church to a group of monks called the Camaldolese.

Over time, the town of Castro became less important. Because of this, the bishop moved his home to Bono.

In 1503, the area of Castro joined with two other church districts. Together, they formed a new district called the Diocese of Alghero. Today, the area that was once Castro is part of the Diocese of Ozieri.
