Ossian is a small town located in Livingston County, New York, United States. In 2010, about 789 people lived there. The town got its name from a famous character called Ossian. He was a blind storyteller from ancient times. A Scottish poet named James Macpherson wrote popular poems about him in 1761. Ossian is the southernmost town in Livingston County.

History of Ossian
The area where Ossian is located was first settled around 1804. This happened near a place now called Ossian Center. The town of Ossian was officially created in 1808. At that time, it was part of Allegany County. Later, in 1856, Ossian became part of Livingston County.
Geography and Location
Ossian covers a total area of about 102.7 square kilometers (39.66 square miles). Most of this area is land. Only a tiny part, about 0.07 square kilometers (0.03 square miles), is water.
The western and southern edges of the town share a border with Allegany County. Part of the eastern edge borders Steuben County. New York State Route 436 is a main road that goes through the northern part of the town.
