Dansville is a town located in Steuben County, New York, United States. It's important not to confuse it with a nearby village also named Dansville, which is in Livingston County. According to the 2010 census, about 1,842 people lived in this town. The town was named after Daniel Faulkner. The Town of Dansville is found in the northwest part of Steuben County, just north of the city of Hornell.

History of Dansville
The town of Dansville was created in 1796, at the same time as Steuben County itself. However, people didn't start settling here until around 1804. A very important early citizen, Daniel P. Faulkner, was often called "Captain Dan" by everyone, and the town was named after him.
Over the years, parts of Dansville were used to create other towns. For example, the towns of Cohocton and Howard were formed in 1812. Later, Wayland was formed in 1848, and Fremont in 1854. In 1822, a section of Dansville, including the Village of Dansville, was moved to the Town of Sparta in Livingston County.
Geography of Dansville
The town of Dansville covers a total area of about 125 square kilometers (48.1 square miles). Most of this area is land, with only a small amount (about 0.26 square kilometers or 0.1 square miles) being water.
The Village of Dansville is located just north of this town, but it is in a different county, Livingston County. Livingston County also forms the northern and part of the western border of Dansville. Allegany County makes up the rest of the western border of the town.
New York State Route 36 is a major road that runs north and south through Dansville. Interstate 390 also passes through the very northeast corner of the town.

- South Dansville – This is the main community in the town. It's a hamlet located on County Road 46, near Mill Creek.

- Stony Brook Glen – This is a very scenic and beautiful area located in the northern part of the town.
- Stony Brook State Park – This is a state park found in the northeast part of the town, right off NY-36. It's a great place to visit!
Notable People from Dansville
- Andrew J. Lorish (November 8, 1832–August 11, 1897) – He was a Commissary Sergeant in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He received the Medal of Honor, which is a very high award for bravery, because of his actions during the war.
