Wayland is a town located in Steuben County, New York, in the United States. In 2020, about 3,733 people lived there.
The Town of Wayland also contains a smaller area called the Village of Wayland. The town is found in the northern part of Steuben County, to the northwest of Bath.

History of Wayland
Early Settlements
People from Europe started settling in the Wayland area around 1806. This was after the Revolutionary War ended.
Before that, for hundreds of years, the Seneca Native Americans lived here. They were a strong tribe and part of the powerful Iroquois Confederacy.
Town Formation
Wayland officially became a town in 1848. It was created from parts of two other towns: Cohocton and Dansville.
Later, in 1854, a piece of Wayland was used to create the Town of Fremont.
Historic Places and Events
The Rowe House is a special old building in Wayland. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is important to the history of the United States.
On August 30, 1943, a train accident happened near Wayland. A passenger train called the Lackawanna Limited had a collision with a local freight train. This event was a sad day for the community.
Geography of Wayland
Size and Location
Wayland covers about 39.5 square miles (102.4 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, about 39 square miles (101.1 square kilometers). A small part, about 0.5 square miles (1.3 square kilometers), is water.
The northern and part of the western edges of Wayland touch Livingston County.
Roads and Transportation
Several important roads run through Wayland. New York State Route 21 goes north and south through the town. It crosses with New York State Route 15 and New York State Route 63 in the Village of Wayland.
Interstate 390, a major highway, crosses the town from west to east.
Wayland is also the northern end of the B&H Rail Corp.'s Gang Mills–Wayland Line. In the past, Wayland had direct train connections to Rochester and Buffalo. These connections were removed in the 1950s and 1960s.
Local Industry
The Woodcroftery factory used to be in Wayland. It was located at Park Street and 2nd Avenue. This factory made wooden bowls and other items.

- Loon Lake – This is a lake located in the southern part of the town.
- Patchinsville – This is a small community, or hamlet. It is south of Wayland village on NY-21.
- Perkinsville – This is another hamlet. It is southwest of Wayland village and north of Interstate I-390.
- Wayland – This is the main village located in the northern part of the town.
