Sparta is a small town located in Livingston County, New York, in the United States. In 2010, about 1,624 people lived there. Sparta is in the southeast part of Livingston County, just north of the town of Dansville.

History of Sparta
People first started settling in the Sparta area around 1794. The town of Sparta was officially created in 1789. This was even before Livingston County itself was formed!
Over time, parts of Sparta were used to create other towns. These included Springwater in 1816, West Sparta in 1846, and Groveland in 1856. Sparta also gained land from other towns, like Dansville (which is in Steuben County) in 1822, and Groveland again in 1856.
Famous People from Sparta
- Daniel Shays, who led a famous event called Shays' Rebellion, spent his later years living in Sparta.
Geography and Location
Sparta covers an area of about 27.7 square miles (71.96 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
A small part of Sparta's southern border touches Steuben County.
Several roads pass through Sparta. New York State Route 255 (which is no longer in use) used to connect with New York State Route 256 in Sparta. New York State Route 63 is a main road that runs north and south through the western part of the town.
Conesus Inlet is a stream in the northwest part of Sparta. It flows towards Conesus Lake.

Communities and Places in Sparta
- Groveland Station – This is a small community, also called a hamlet. Part of it is in the northwest corner of Sparta.
- Reed Corners – Another hamlet located in the southern part of the town.
- Scottsburg – This hamlet is in the northwest part of Sparta, along NY-256. It was named after early settlers, Matthew and William Scott. This area is close to where the first settlers arrived in the town.
- Sparta Center – This is a central spot within the town of Sparta.
- White Bridge – A location in the southwest part of the town, near Dansville, on NY-63.
