Springwater is a small town located in Livingston County, New York, United States. It is found in the southeastern part of the county. In 2010, about 2,439 people lived here. Springwater is known for its beautiful natural areas, including parts of the Finger Lakes region.

A Look Back in Time: Springwater's History

The first people to settle in the Springwater area arrived around 1807. The town of Springwater was officially created in 1816. It was formed from parts of two other towns: Sparta and Naples. Naples is a town located in Ontario County.

In 1866, there was a big problem between landowners and people called squatters. Squatters were people living on land they did not own. This conflict led to many people being asked to leave their homes.

Where is Springwater? Geography and Nature

Springwater covers an area of about 137.6 square kilometers (53.1 square miles). Only a tiny part of this, about 0.03 square kilometers (0.01 square miles), is water.

The southern border of Springwater touches Steuben County. The eastern border and part of the northern border are shared with Ontario County.

Lakes and Rivers in Springwater

The southernmost tip of Hemlock Lake is located in the northern part of Springwater. Hemlock Lake is one of the smaller Finger Lakes. The Springwater Valley runs through the middle of the town and ends at Hemlock Lake. Many small streams flow into Hemlock Lake from this valley, including Springwater Creek and Lime Kiln Creek. The water from Hemlock Lake eventually flows into the Genesee River.

The Cohocton River also starts in the eastern part of Springwater. This river flows south and is part of the larger Susquehanna River system.

Roads and Transportation

Two important roads, New York State Route 15 and New York State Route 15A, meet in Springwater village.

From 1854 to 1956, a train line called the Erie Railroad served Springwater. This line connected Jersey City to Rochester. However, the part of the railway that went through Springwater was removed in 1956. This was done to encourage people to use highways more.
