West Sparta is a small town located in Livingston County, New York, United States. In 2010, about 1,255 people lived there. The town gets its name from its neighbor, Sparta.
West Sparta is in the south-central part of Livingston County. It is located to the northwest of the town of Dansville.

History of West Sparta
People first started settling in the West Sparta area around the year 1795. The town itself was officially created in 1846. It was formed from a part of the nearby town of Sparta.
A special place called the R. P. Kemp No. 1 Site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. This means it's an important historical or archaeological site recognized by the United States government.
Geography and Nature
West Sparta covers a total area of about 86.6 square kilometers (or 33.45 square miles). All of this area is land.
Several important natural and man-made features pass through the town. Canaseraga Creek flows through West Sparta; this creek eventually flows into the Genesee River. The major highway, Interstate 390, also runs through the town. New York State Route 36 runs right next to the Interstate. In the past, the Genesee Valley Canal also passed through West Sparta.
