Club Career Highlights
Oswaldo Sánchez started his amazing football journey at a young age. He played for several top clubs in Mexico, becoming a legend in the sport.
Starting Out with Atlas and América
Oswaldo Sánchez began his professional career with Atlas when he was 20 years old. His first game was on October 30, 1993, as a substitute. He soon became the main goalkeeper for Atlas.
In 1996, Sánchez moved to Club América. After a short time on the bench, he quickly became their starting goalkeeper. He helped América compete at a high level.
Becoming a Star with Guadalajara
In 1999, Sánchez joined Chivas de Guadalajara, a big rival of América. Here, he became the team's captain and a very important player. His amazing goalkeeping skills and leadership helped Chivas reach the finals of the Clausura 2004 season. They lost that final in a penalty shootout.
Finally, Sánchez won his first league title with Guadalajara in the Apertura 2006 season. This was a huge moment in his career. He even scored a goal once in a 2000 Copa Merconorte match! It was a header from a corner kick, which is very rare for a goalkeeper.
Success with Santos Laguna and Retirement
After his championship with Chivas, Sánchez moved to Santos Laguna in 2007. In his first season, he helped save the team from being relegated to a lower league. He then led Santos Laguna to win two more championships: the Clausura 2008 and Clausura 2012 titles.
After 21 years of playing professional football, Oswaldo Sánchez retired after the Apertura 2014 season. He ended his career on a high note, winning the Copa MX in his final season.
International Career with Mexico
Oswaldo Sánchez also had a long and successful career playing for the Mexican national team. He first played for the Mexico U20 team in 1993. His debut for the senior national team was in 1996.
He was part of Mexico's squad for three FIFA World Cup tournaments: France 1998, 2002, and 2006. For the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, he was chosen as Mexico's starting goalkeeper. Just before the tournament, his father passed away. Despite this sad news, Sánchez showed incredible strength and returned to Germany to play in Mexico's first game, which they won.
Sánchez played his 99th and final international match for Mexico on October 11, 2011, against Brazil. He was substituted near the end of the game, marking his official retirement from international football.
