The Ottawa Sport Hall of Fame (also known as French: Temple de la renommée du sport d'Ottawa) is a special place. It celebrates amazing athletes and sports figures from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. This Hall of Fame honors people who have achieved great things in sports. As of 2019, more than 270 people have been recognized here.
History of the Hall of Fame
The Ottawa Sport Hall of Fame first opened its doors in 1968. It was located at the Ottawa Civic Centre back then. Over the years, it moved to different spots. In 2005, it moved to the second floor of the Corel Centre. Then, in 2011, it found a new home at Ottawa City Hall.
A group of volunteers helps run the Hall of Fame. They choose new members in different groups. These groups are athletes, "builders" (people who helped grow sports), and media members. People are chosen from nominations sent in by the community. The goal is to include all kinds of sports contributions from Ottawa.
The Hall of Fame is a non-profit organization. This means it uses its money to support its mission, not to make a profit. It keeps many cool sports items and special plaques. These honor the more than 270 people who have been inducted. The physical museum at Ottawa City Hall closed on November 30, 2024. The city decided to use the space for other things. The Hall of Fame's board of directors has not yet announced a new physical home for the items.
