History of the Hall of Fame
The Ottawa Sport Hall of Fame first opened its doors in 1968. It started at the Ottawa Civic Centre. Over the years, it moved a couple of times. In 2005, it moved to the Corel Centre. Then, in 2011, it found its current home at Ottawa City Hall.
A group of volunteers helps run the Hall of Fame. They work hard to choose new members each year. These new members are called "inductees." People from the community can suggest who they think should be honored. The Hall of Fame tries to include all kinds of sports and contributions from Ottawa. It's a non-profit group, which means it doesn't make money for itself. It keeps special items and plaques to remember all the amazing people it has honored.
Honoring Sports Heroes
The Ottawa Sport Hall of Fame celebrates many different kinds of sports heroes. These heroes are put into special groups. Some are honored as "athletes" for their amazing skills in a sport. New Members in 2019
In 2019, several new members joined the Hall of Fame. These included Chantal Benoit, a talented athlete, and Chris Phillips, a well-known hockey player. Also honored were Rick Desclouds and John Halvorsen. The Hall of Fame also recognized the amazing 1968 and 1969 Ottawa Rough Riders football teams. Their induction ceremony was held on May 31, 2019, at Lansdowne Park.
New Members in 2020 and 2021
The induction ceremony for 2020 had to be put on hold. This was because of the COVID-19 pandemic in Ottawa. It was moved to 2021 instead. The new members for that year included Dave Smart, Marina Zenk, and Dr. Don Johnson. Also inducted were Phil Ashcroft, John Therien, and Derek Holmes.
