History of Overly
Overly started in 1905 as a place for trains to load and unload goods. It was built along the Soo Line Railroad. The city got its own post office on August 21, 1905. However, the post office closed down on November 9, 1996. Now, Overly shares its ZIP Code (58384) with a nearby town called Willow City.
Overly's Railroad Past
For many years, Overly was an important railroad center. It was a spot where train crews would switch shifts. The railroad even built a special building called a roundhouse to fix and maintain locomotives (train engines). They also had places to get coal and water for the trains. A fun thing for people in Overly was to watch the trains arrive and leave at the depot.
Some people think the town's name, "Overly," came from the train crews who would "lay over" (stay) in town during their breaks. Others believe it was named after an early settler, Hans Overlie.
Population Changes in Overly
In 1920, Overly had its highest population, with 193 people. Shipping Wheat and being a railroad hub made people think the town would keep growing. But over time, fewer trains stopped in Overly. By the 1950s, trains just passed by without stopping. The railroad removed its buildings, and businesses closed. The city's population slowly dropped. By the 1980 census, only 25 people lived there. In 2022, the population was about 11 people.
Geography of Overly
Overly is located in Cecil Township, which is in the eastern part of Bottineau County. The city is very close to the border of Rolette County. A small part of the city was actually planned to be in Rolette County. However, the 2000 census showed no people living in that part. So, Overly is considered to be only in Bottineau County.
The United States Census Bureau says that Overly covers about 0.961 square kilometers (0.371 square miles) of land. There is no water area in the city.
