Ozawkie is a small city in Jefferson County, Kansas, in the United States. In 2020, about 638 people lived there. Ozawkie is special because it's right next to Perry Lake. The city actually used to be in a different spot! It was moved to its current location before the big lake was built. This move happened without help from the government.

History of Ozawkie

The city was first called Osawkee. In 1855, it became the first county seat of Jefferson County, Kansas. A county seat is like the main town where the county government offices are located. The name Ozawkie comes from the Sauk or Saukee Native American people.

In 1930, people started hearing rumors. They heard that the US Army Corps of Engineers might build a dam. This would mean the town would need to move. However, it wasn't until 1954 that the Perry Dam Project was officially approved.

Since Ozawkie was not an "incorporated" city at the time, the US government would not pay to move it. An incorporated city is one that has its own official local government. So, the citizens of Ozawkie decided to work together. They formed a non-profit group to help move their town. In 1966, Ozawkie was successfully moved to higher ground. This new spot was west of the original town. A water tower, a school, and 26 homes were built in the new location.

Finally, in 1967, the relocated Ozawkie became an incorporated city.
