The Paaruntyi are an Aboriginal Australian people. They traditionally lived in the state of New South Wales. It is important not to confuse them with the Parrintyi people.

Traditional Lands of the Paaruntyi

The Paaruntyi people lived on a large area of land. This land was about 20,700 square kilometers (8,000 square miles). It was located around the Paroo River and also near Cuttaburra and Kulkyne Creek.

Their traditional country stretched from Goorimpa in the north. It went all the way to Brindangabba and Berawinna Downs. Their land reached the border with Queensland at Hungerford. Important places like Wanaaring and Yantabulla were also part of their territory.

Neighbouring Peoples

The Paaruntyi shared borders with several other Aboriginal groups. To their north were the Kalali and Badyuri peoples. The Kurnu people lived to their east.

To the south of the Paaruntyi were the Naualko people. On their western side were the Wanjiwalku people. In the northwest, they also shared a border with the Karenggapa people.

Paaruntyi Social Life and Beliefs

The Paaruntyi people had a special way of organizing their society. They used a system with two main groups for marriage. This system helped decide who could marry whom.

Each of these main groups had its own important symbols, called totems. These totems were often animals. They represented a special connection between the group and nature.
