The chestnut-crowned becard (Pachyramphus castaneus) is a cool bird with a reddish-brown cap. It belongs to the Tityridae bird family. For a long time, scientists thought it was part of other bird families. But now, strong evidence shows it fits best with the Tityridae family.
This bird lives in many parts of South America. You can find it in the Amazon Basin in countries like Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia. It also lives in parts of Venezuela. Further south, it's found in southeastern Brazil, Paraguay, and the very northeastern tip of Argentina.

Where the Chestnut-crowned Becard Lives
The chestnut-crowned becard has two main homes in South America. One is the huge Amazon Basin. The other is the Cerrado region of Brazil.
Amazon Basin Home
In the Amazon Basin, these birds live mostly in the central and western parts. They avoid the high mountain areas. This Amazon home stretches about 3,200 kilometers (2,000 miles).
Sometimes, you'll find them in smaller, separate areas. For example, there's a group near the border of Venezuela and Brazil. Another small group lives near the Caribbean coast of northern Venezuela.
In the west, their home reaches the foothills of the Andes mountains. It connects from southern Colombia, through eastern Ecuador and Peru, and into parts of Bolivia.
Cerrado Region Home
The Cerrado region is in southeastern South America. This area also includes many coastal parts of Brazil. This home stretches about 2,600 kilometers (1,600 miles) from northeast to southeast Brazil.
What Kind of Home It Likes
The chestnut-crowned becard likes certain types of places to live. Its favorite spots are warm, wet lowland forests. It also enjoys moist montane forests, which are forests found in mountains. Even areas where forests have been cut down can sometimes be home for this bird.
