Pacific-Union Club facts for kids
The Pacific-Union Club is a special social club located at 1000 California Street in San Francisco, California. It sits in the famous Nob Hill neighborhood. This club was formed in 1889. It was created when two older clubs, the Pacific Club (started in 1852) and the Union Club (started in 1854), decided to join together.
The club's building is a very old and grand house. It used to be the home of a wealthy silver businessman named James Clair Flood. This house is known as the Flood Mansion. A Canadian architect named Augustus Laver designed the original building. Later, another architect, Willis Polk, helped rebuild and make the mansion even bigger to become the club's home.
This building is thought to be the first "brownstone" house built west of the Mississippi River. A brownstone is a type of building made from a reddish-brown stone. The Pacific-Union Club building was one of the only structures in its area to survive the big San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906. The Fairmont Hotel across the street also survived.
