The James C. Flood Mansion is the home of the Pacific-Union Club

The Pacific-Union Club is a well-known social club located in San Francisco, California. It sits at the very top of Nob Hill, a famous area in the city. Many people consider it one of the most important and exclusive clubs on the West Coast of the United States. It is often compared to other top clubs like the Knickerbocker Club in New York.

The club was created in 1889 when two older clubs, the Pacific Club (started in 1852) and the Union Club (started in 1854), decided to join together.

The building where the club is located was first built as a home for a very rich silver miner named James Clair Flood. This grand house, known as the James C. Flood Mansion, was designed by an architect named Augustus Laver. Later, another architect, Willis Polk, helped rebuild and expand the mansion to become the club's home. It was the first building of its kind, made of a reddish-brown stone called brownstone, to be built west of the Mississippi River. What's amazing is that this building, along with the Fairmont Hotel across the street, was one of the only structures in the area to survive the huge San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906.

The Pacific-Union Club has played an important role in the history of the western United States.
