Pack Monadnock, also known as Pack Monadnock Mountain, is a mountain in south-central New Hampshire. It stands about 2,290 feet (700 m) tall. This makes it the highest point in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire. It is also the tallest peak in the Wapack Range of mountains. The mountain is located in the towns of Peterborough and Temple.
Pack Monadnock is a special type of mountain called a monadnock. This means it's a mountain that stands out by itself, rising from a flatter area. The mountain is made of very old metamorphic rock, which formed about 400 million years ago!
You can explore Pack Monadnock using trails. The 22 mi (35 km) Wapack Trail goes right over the mountain. There are also shorter trails to enjoy. From the top, you can see amazing views. Look north to the White Mountains, west to Mount Monadnock, and south into Massachusetts. Just north of Pack Monadnock is North Pack Monadnock Mountain. To the south, you'll find Temple Mountain.
Much of Pack Monadnock is part of Miller State Park. During certain times of the year, you can drive a car up a road to a picnic area at the top. The summit also has a station that checks air pollution.
What's in a Name?
The name "Pack Monadnock" has an interesting story. Local traditions say that "pack" is a Native American word meaning "little." "Monadnock" describes a mountain that stands alone. So, "Little Monadnock" shows its connection to the much taller Mount Monadnock. Mount Monadnock is about 3,165 feet (965 m) tall and is located about 11 miles (18 km) to the west. It's important not to mix up Pack Monadnock with Little Monadnock Mountain, which is another mountain about 17 miles (27 km) further west.
Wildlife and Nature
Pack Monadnock is a great place for nature lovers, especially those who enjoy watching birds. The mountain is home to the Pack Monadnock Raptor Migration Observatory. Here, birdwatchers gather every year to see the amazing hawk migration.
During the busiest migration time in September, you can see hundreds of hawks flying together. They often fly in circles, called "kettles," as they ride warm air currents called thermals. This helps them save energy as they travel south for the winter. It's a truly spectacular sight!
