Paco Ibáñez: His Life Story
Paco Ibáñez moved to France in 1952. He recorded his very first music album in 1964. In May 1968, there were big student protests in France. Paco performed at the Sorbonne, a famous university in Paris, during these events. This made him known as a "rebel artist" because his songs often spoke about freedom and justice.
Early Years and Family
Paco was the youngest of four children. His father was from Valencia, and his mother was from the Basque Country in Spain. He spent his first few years in Barcelona. His family had to leave Spain and go to France because of the Spanish Civil War. His father was part of a workers' union called the CNT.
They lived in Paris until Germany started occupying France. Then, his father was arrested and sent to a camp for Spanish people who had fought against the government. Paco's mother took her four children back to San Sebastián in Spain to find work. They lived in her family's old home in Aduna, Guipuzkoa, until Paco was 14 years old. He returned to Barcelona in 1994 after living away for a long time.
Connection with the Basque Country
Paco's mother was Basque, and he spent part of his childhood on her family's farm. This gave him a strong connection with Basque artists and thinkers. He worked with people like Imanol Larzabal, Xabier Lete, Jorge Oteiza, and Bernardo Atxaga. He also took part in a group of artists called Ez Dok Amairu.
He has sung and recorded songs in the Basque language. One example is his album Oroitzen (1999), which he made with Imanol Larzabal.
