Paddington's Journey: From Peru to London
The film begins in the deep jungles of Darkest Peru. A British explorer named Montgomery Clyde discovers a new type of bear. He learns that these bears are very smart and can even learn English. They also love marmalade! He names two of them Lucy and Pastuzo. As he leaves, he tells the bears they are always welcome in London.
About 40 years later, Aunt Lucy and Uncle Pastuzo live happily with their nephew, Paddington. A big earthquake suddenly destroys their home. Uncle Pastuzo saves Aunt Lucy, but he gets hurt and cannot reach safety. He sadly passes away. Aunt Lucy encourages Paddington to go to London to find a new home. She helps him hide on a cargo ship.
Arriving in London
The young bear arrives at Paddington Station in London. There, he meets the Brown family. Mr. Henry Brown, the father, is not sure about having a bear. But Mrs. Mary Brown, the mother, and their two children, Judy and Jonathan, find him very sweet. The family's housekeeper, Mrs. Bird, also likes him. They decide to let Paddington stay with them temporarily. They name him "Paddington" after the station where they found him.
Searching for a Home
Paddington hopes to find the explorer who met Aunt Lucy and Uncle Pastuzo. He believes this explorer might offer him a home. However, Paddington does not know the explorer's name. Mrs. Brown takes Paddington to Mr. Gruber, an antique shop owner. Mr. Gruber discovers that Paddington's hat has a special stamp from the Geographers Guild.
The Guild says they never sent anyone to Peru. But with Mr. Brown's help, Paddington sneaks into the Guild's archives. He finds out that Montgomery Clyde did go on an expedition to Peru! Paddington then uses phone books to find all the "M. Clydes" in London.
A Dangerous Collector
Meanwhile, a mean museum animal collector named Millicent Clyde is looking for exotic animals. She wants to add them to her collection at the Natural History Museum. When she hears about Paddington, she decides she must capture him.
One day, the Brown family leaves Paddington home alone. Millicent works with the Browns' nosy neighbor, Mr. Curry. She sneaks into the house to try and catch Paddington. Paddington manages to defend himself, but he accidentally starts a small fire in the kitchen. Mr. Brown does not believe Paddington's story about Millicent. He says Paddington must find a new home very soon. Mrs. Brown sadly agrees.
The Truth About Millicent
Feeling unwanted, Paddington leaves the Browns' home. He tries to find Montgomery Clyde himself. He finally finds the house. But he learns that Clyde passed away years ago. He also discovers that Millicent is Clyde's daughter!
Millicent is angry at her father. He lost his job because he refused to bring a valuable Peruvian bear home. He changed his mind and did not want to harm the bears. Millicent wants to succeed where her father failed. She wants to capture a Peruvian bear to become rich and famous.
She uses a tranquilizer to stop Paddington. She prepares to add him to her collection. But Mr. Curry finds out her true plans. He quickly tells the Brown family. They rush to save Paddington!
Saving Paddington
The Brown family arrives and rescues Paddington. Paddington cleverly throws a marmalade sandwich at Millicent. This sandwich was left in his hat by Uncle Pastuzo for emergencies. The marmalade attracts many pigeons, which distract Millicent. Mrs. Bird opens a roof hatch and pushes Millicent onto a flagpole, trapping her.
After this adventure, the Browns happily let Paddington move in with them permanently. Millicent is stopped and has to do community service at a petting zoo. This petting zoo was actually opened by her father after he lost his job. Paddington writes to Aunt Lucy, telling her he is happy and has finally found a loving home.
