The Paintings on masonite are a group of 27 abstract paintings created by the famous artist Joan Miró. He made these artworks using a special type of hardboard called masonite. Miró created them right after the Spanish Civil War began on July 18, 1936.
These paintings were a big change from his earlier works. Before this series, he had a period known as his wild paintings. That style was used for art he made between 1934 and 1936, just before the war started.
What Are These Paintings Like?
Rosa Maria Malet, who used to be in charge of the Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona, has talked about these paintings. She compares them to Miró's earlier "wild paintings" which were often on copper.
She explained that when the civil war started, Miró didn't just paint what he saw. Instead, he created these 27 "masonites" as a way to express strong, raw feelings. She said that the "wild" part of these paintings wasn't just what they showed. It was also about how Miró painted them. He used the masonite board itself as a starting point. He mixed materials like casein, tar, and sand. Malet described the "masonites" as having "the force of a shout."
The Museum of Modern Art in New York also noted how strong and forceful the painting style was. They suggested that these artworks might show Miró's feelings about the difficult times in his home country. Even though Miró himself said he made them "despite the current events."
In these paintings, Miró focused more on how the art felt and the materials he used. He didn't try to tell a story. He used oil and enamel paints, casein, tar, sand, and even small pebbles. Sometimes, Miró would even scratch into the masonite boards. This created deep marks and made the art feel very immediate and powerful.
Miró painted these works in Mont-roig del Camp and Barcelona. After finishing them, he left Spain. He moved to Paris in the fall of 1936 and stayed there for four years.
