Pallonji Shapoorji Mistry (born June 1, 1929 – died June 28, 2022) was a very rich businessman from India who later became an Irish citizen. He was known for his huge construction company, the Shapoorji Pallonji Group. He also owned a large part of Tata Group, which is one of India's biggest companies. At one point, he was one of the richest people in the world.
Early Life and Family Business
Pallonji Mistry was born in Mumbai (which was then called Bombay) on June 1, 1929. His family belonged to the Parsi community in Mumbai.
His family owned a very successful construction company called Shapoorji Pallonji. Pallonji's father, Shapoorji Mistry, built many famous buildings in Mumbai. These include important banks like the Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank and the Reserve Bank of India.
His Amazing Career
Pallonji Mistry's father first bought shares in Tata Sons in the 1930s. This was a very smart move! By 2011, Pallonji Mistry owned 18.4% of Tata Sons. This made him the largest individual shareholder in the company. Tata Sons is the main company of the huge Tata Group.
Pallonji Mistry was the chairman of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group. Through this group, he owned several companies. These included Shapoorji Pallonji Construction Limited and Eureka Forbes Limited, which makes water purifiers. He was also the former chairman of Associated Cement Companies.
His younger son, Cyrus Mistry, became the chairman of Tata Sons in 2011. He held this important position until 2016. Pallonji Mistry was sometimes called the Phantom of Bombay House. This nickname came from his quiet but powerful way of influencing things at the Tata Group's headquarters in Mumbai.
By mid-2021, Pallonji Mistry's wealth was estimated to be about US$30 billion. When he passed away, it was around US$29 billion. He was the richest Irish billionaire at that time. He was also the 143rd richest person in the world.
Personal Life and Awards
In 2003, Pallonji Mistry became an Irish citizen. He did this because his wife, Pat "Patsy" Perin Dubash, was born in Dublin, Ireland. Even after becoming an Irish citizen, he continued to live in Mumbai. His family loved horses, and this was one reason for their connection to Ireland. Mistry owned a large stud farm in Pune, India.
Pallonji Mistry had two sons and two daughters. His older son, Shapoor Mistry, now manages the Shapoorji Pallonji group. His younger son, Cyrus Mistry, was the chairman of the Tata Group. His daughter, Aloo, is married to Noel Tata, who is the half-brother of Ratan Tata.
In January 2016, the Government of India gave him the Padma Bhushan award. This is one of India's highest civilian honors. He received it for his important work in business and industry.
Pallonji Mistry passed away in Mumbai on June 28, 2022, at the age of 93.
