Palma Escrita is a special area, like a neighborhood, located in the municipality of Las Marías, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 507 people lived there. It is known as a "barrio," which is a type of local division in Puerto Rico.
A Look at Palma Escrita's History
Puerto Rico used to be controlled by Spain. After the Spanish–American War, which ended in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened under an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is part of the U.S. but does not have all the same rights as a state.
In 1899, the United States government took a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that 1,143 people lived in the Palma Escrita barrio at that time.

Understanding Local Areas: Sectors
In Puerto Rico, "barrios" are like larger neighborhoods or districts. These barrios are then divided into even smaller local areas called sectores (which means sectors in English).
The names of these smaller sectores can be different. Some are simply called "sector," while others might be known as "urbanización," "reparto," "barriada," or "residencial." Each name describes a slightly different type of community.
Here are the sectors you can find within Palma Escrita barrio:
Sector Abanico, Sector Alto Manzano, Sector Mayagüecillo, Sector Palo Prieto, and Sector Zapata.
