History of Palmarejo
Puerto Rico was once under the rule of Spain. After a conflict known as the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened in 1898, as part of the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a territory of the U.S.
In 1899, the United States government conducted a count of all the people living in Puerto Rico. This official count is called a census. The census showed that Palmarejo and a nearby barrio called Llanos had a combined population of 1,160 people.
