History of Palmas
Becoming a U.S. Territory
Long ago, Puerto Rico was part of Spain. After a conflict called the Spanish–American War, Spain and the United States signed a peace agreement. This agreement was known as the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this treaty, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened in 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is a territory that belongs to the U.S. but is not fully part of it like a state.
Counting the Population Over Time
In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a special count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This type of count is called a census. The census found that 1,200 people lived in the Palmas barrio at that time. Over the years, the population of Palmas has changed. The U.S. Census has continued to count the residents every ten years.
