A Look Back: Palmer's History
Palmer was first known as "Tate's Village." In 1925, it officially became a town. It was renamed to honor Clarence William Palmer. He owned a lot of the land where the town was built.
The town grew quickly in the early 1900s. This was mainly because of coal mining. The Tennessee Consolidated Coal Company had big mining operations in the area.

Palmer is located in the southeastern part of Grundy County. Its exact location is 35°21′23″N 85°33′43″W / 35.35639°N 85.56194°W. The town sits on top of the Cumberland Plateau, which is a rugged, high area. Just west of Palmer is the steep edge of the Plateau, called the Sequatchie Valley escarpment.
The point where Grundy, Marion, and Sequatchie counties meet is just south of Palmer. Tennessee State Route 108 is a road that goes through Palmer. It connects the town to Gruetli-Laager to the west. It also connects to Whitwell in the Sequatchie Valley to the southeast.
The Collins River starts just northeast of Palmer. This river flows for about 67 miles (108 km). The town of Palmer covers an area of about 4.93 square miles (12.8 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
