Palmetto is a city in the state of Georgia, United States. It is mostly located in Fulton County. A small part of the city is also in Coweta County. In 2020, about 5,071 people lived in Palmetto.
History of Palmetto
Palmetto became an official town in 1854. This means the Georgia General Assembly, which is like Georgia's state parliament, gave it special permission to govern itself.
The city got its name from a group of soldiers called the Palmetto Regiment. These soldiers were from South Carolina and fought in the Mexican–American War.
In 2023, something important happened in Palmetto. The city elected its first female mayor, Teresa Thomas-Smith. She is also the first African American mayor of Palmetto. A mayor is the leader of a city's government.
