The Pantheon of the Duchess of Sevillano (also known as Panteón de la Duquesa de Sevillano in Spanish) is a special building in Guadalajara, Spain. It was built as a beautiful tomb, or mausoleum, for a very important person. The building has a mix of different architectural styles, which is called eclectic.

Who Built This Amazing Place?

A wealthy and important lady named María Diega Desmaissières y Sevillano decided to build this pantheon. She was also known as the Countess of Vega del Pozo. In Guadalajara, people often called her the "Duchess of Sevillano" because of another one of her titles.

She inherited a lot of money. She used a big part of her fortune to support art and culture. In 1887, she asked a famous architect, Ricardo Velázquez Bosco, to design this special building for her.

What Does It Look Like?

The Pantheon of the Duchess of Sevillano has a unique shape. Its floor plan looks like a greek cross, which means it has four arms of equal length. The building is made from strong stone found in Novelda.

One of the most striking features is its large dome. This dome is covered with beautiful purple tiles, making it stand out.

Art Inside the Pantheon

The inside of the building is just as impressive as the outside. You can find amazing artworks there:

  • A painting on the main altar by Alejandro Ferrant y Fischermans.
  • Sculptures made of bronze and marble by Ángel García Díaz.
  • These sculptures include four angels that stand around the sarcophagus (a stone coffin) in the crypt, which is the underground part of the pantheon.

The design of the building's vault (its arched ceiling) was so inspiring that it influenced many works by Antonio Palacios, who was a student of the architect Velázquez Bosco.

The building was finally finished in 1916. This was the same year the Duchess of Sevillano passed away.
