The Story of Papa Gino's
How it All Started
Papa Gino's began in East Boston, Massachusetts. It opened in 1961 and was first called "Piece O' Pizza." The owners were Helen and Michael Valerio. In 1968, they changed the name to "Papa Gino's." They started opening more restaurants. By 1991, they had grown to 220 locations. Then, they sold the company to a group of investors.
Growing the Business
In 1997, Papa Gino's bought another restaurant chain. This was D'Angelo Sandwich Shops, which also started in Massachusetts. D'Angelo specializes in tasty sandwiches. A few months later, a new company called PGHC Holdings bought Papa Gino's.
Changes in 2018
In 2018, Papa Gino's went through some big changes. On November 4, 2018, many Papa Gino's restaurants closed suddenly. This included their only location in Maine. The number of restaurants went from over 150 down to 97. Employees were not told beforehand about the closures. The next day, PGHC Holdings announced they would sell the restaurant chains to a company called Wynnchurch Capital.
A Fresh Start
After these changes, Papa Gino's began to grow again. On June 14, 2022, it was announced that Papa Gino's would open a new restaurant. This was the first new location since the company got its fresh start.
Papa Gino's and Sports
Since the late 1990s, Papa Gino's has teamed up with famous sports teams. They have partnered with the Boston Red Sox baseball team and the New England Patriots football team. They also worked with individual players from these teams. For example, they partnered with former Red Sox player David Ortiz.
In 2006, Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi became a spokesperson for Papa Gino's. He took over from kicker Adam Vinatieri. Papa Gino's also partners with other local sports teams. These include the Providence Bruins, the Worcester Red Sox, and Holy Cross. They also support many kids' teams in the communities where their restaurants are located.
