Paradiso is a town in Switzerland. It is located in the canton of Ticino, near the city of Lugano. Paradiso sits right on the shore of Lake Lugano. Even though it has its own government, the city of Lugano surrounds it on all other sides.

History of Paradiso

Paradiso was first mentioned in old records in 1335. Back then, it was called Calprino. In 1835, people started calling a part of the village Paradiso. This name became official in 1929. It helped avoid confusion with another place called Caprino across the lake.

In 1951, during some digging in Calprino, people found signs of a Roman settlement. This means people lived here a very long time ago! Later, in the 7th century, a small group of Langobard people settled in the same area.

The village of Morchino dates back to the 8th century. Other parts, like Calprino, Fontana, and Guidino, are mentioned between the 12th and 14th centuries. In 1040, a Benedictine monastery owned land in Calprino. They later owned a lot of land and a special church area in the village.

The church in Paradiso was once part of the parish of Pambio. A chapel called Beata Vergine alla Geretta has been used since the 16th century.

For a long time, the town's economy was based on farming. People grew grains and grapes for wine. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the silk industry became important.

Paradiso became a popular holiday spot in the late 1800s. This happened after the Gotthard Railway opened in 1882. The beautiful views of Lake Lugano attracted many visitors. In 1890, the funicular railway up Monte San Salvatore opened. This made it even easier for tourists to visit. The funicular and more boat traffic on the lake helped the hotel and tourism business grow. The number of people living in Paradiso also increased.

In 1966, a highway was built near Lugano. This started to change Paradiso. By the early 2000s, tourism began to slow down. Paradiso then started to become more of a residential area. Many fancy buildings were constructed for people to live in.
