Paraguarí is an important city in Paraguay. It is the capital of the Paraguarí Department. This city is about 66 kilometers (41 miles) away from Asunción, which is the capital of Paraguay. In 2002, about 22,154 people lived here.

What's in a Name? The Story of Paraguarí
Paraguarí is known as "The cradle of National Independence." This is because of a big battle that happened here. On January 13, 1811, Paraguayan troops won against the Argentine Army. This battle is called the Battle of Paraguarí.
The city was started in 1775 by Agustín Fernando de Pinedo. This happened after the Jesuits were no longer allowed in Paraguay. Paraguarí officially became a district on August 18, 1960.

The city of Paraguarí is 66 kilometers (41 miles) from Asunción. To the north, it has the Altos Cordillera mountains. To the south, there is a wide, flat grassland.
Paraguarí is surrounded by three hills. These are Saint Thomas, Cerro Peró (which means Bald Hill), and Cerro Porteño.

Who Lives in Paraguarí?
According to the 2002 census, Paraguarí had 22,154 people living there. Out of these, 11,053 were men and 11,101 were women. Most people, about 13,847, lived in the countryside. The rest, 8,307 people, lived in the city area.
What is the Economy Like?
Paraguarí is very important for farming and raising animals. It has good roads, which makes it a main supplier of food to Asunción.
The city is a busy place for selling farm products. It is also a key learning center for the area. People also dig for granite and kaolin (a type of clay) in quarries here.
Getting Around: Transportation
Paraguarí is 66 kilometers (41 miles) from Asunción. You can get there by following Route 1, which is called “Mariscal Francisco Solano López.”
If you want to take a bus, you can find one at the Bus Terminal in Asunción. Buses to Paraguarí leave very often, about every 15 minutes. If you are coming from the east on Route 2, you will need to take the Rogelio Benítez Road.
A Look Back: History of Paraguarí
Paraguarí was founded by Agustín Fernando de Pinedo. He was ordered by King Charles III of Spain to start the city. This happened after the Jesuits were removed from Paraguay. Pinedo took over their large farms, "Tavapy" and "Campo Grande."
Many Spanish people, especially from Burgos and Andalucía, moved to Paraguarí. The Company of Jesus (Jesuits) had been in Paraguarí since the 7th century. They had a large ranch there until King Charles III ordered them to leave.
Fun Things to See and Do: Tourism
Paraguarí has many interesting places for visitors. You can see the famous fruit stores along Route 1. There's also Kamba Kokué, an old neighborhood. Its name tells us that black slaves once lived in the Missiones area.
The city's train station is one of the oldest in America. The old church in Paraguarí also attracts many visitors. You can also visit the National Museum of Artillery. It shows cannons, old weapons, trophies, photos, and important documents.
Every year, there are exciting bullfights called “toro moñaroha” in the Guaraní language. These happen during the city's celebrations for Saint Thomas' day. The whole city takes part, making it a lively event.
Just outside the city, the road between Paraguarí and Piribebuy is very beautiful. It connects many tourist spots with hills and small rivers. One of these is the Mbatovi reservation. It is about 72 kilometers (45 miles) from Asunción. You can also find places like Chololó, Pinamar, and Piraretá along this road.
