What is Parkside Like?
Geography of Parkside
The Leichhardt River flows from north to south right through the town of Mount Isa. This river divides the suburbs into two main areas: "mineside" and "townside." Parkside is a "mineside" suburb, which means it's located on the western side of the Leichhardt River.
History of Schools in Parkside
Parkside has a rich history, especially when it comes to its schools.
- St Joseph's Catholic Primary School: This school was first opened in 1923 by the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart. It was originally on Railway Avenue. In 1985, the school moved to Twenty-Third Avenue.
- San Jose Catholic Secondary School: The Sisters of St Joseph also started a high school for girls called San Jose Catholic Secondary School in 1964. This school was on Twenty-Third Avenue.
- Mount Isa Catholic High School: In 1985, San Jose College joined with St Kieran's Christian Brothers College to create a new co-educational (for both boys and girls) high school. This new school was called Mount Isa Catholic High School. It was later renamed Good Shepherd Catholic College.
- Mount Isa State High School: This public high school opened its doors in 1953. It closed in 2002. In 2003, it combined with Kalkadoon State High School to form Spinifex State College. The former Mount Isa State High School site became the junior campus (for Years 7-9) of Spinifex State College.
