History of Partridge
The city of Partridge was first planned out in 1886. It officially became a city in 1906. The town was named after the bird called a partridge.
Railroad Development
In 1887, a major railroad company, the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway, built a main train line. This line went through Partridge, connecting it to other towns like Herington and Pratt. The next year, in 1888, the line was made even longer, reaching Liberal. Over time, it stretched all the way to Tucumcari, New Mexico and El Paso, Texas.
The railroad company changed hands a few times. In 1891, it was taken over by the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway. Even though this company closed in 1980, many local people still call the railroad the "Rock Island." Later, it became part of the Saint Louis Southwestern Railroad, also known as "the Cotton Belt." Finally, in 1997, it joined the Union Pacific Railroad.

Years ago, Partridge High School joined with Haven High School. The old mascot for Partridge High School was the Quails. The Partridge Quails boys' basketball team won the state championship in 1954. This was for the Kansas State High School Class B.
