Railroad Development

In 1887, a major railroad company, the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway, built a main train line. This line went through Partridge, connecting it to other towns like Herington and Pratt. The next year, in 1888, the line was made even longer, reaching Liberal. Over time, it stretched all the way to Tucumcari, New Mexico and El Paso, Texas.

The railroad company changed hands a few times. In 1891, it was taken over by the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway. Even though this company closed in 1980, many local people still call the railroad the "Rock Island." Later, it became part of the Saint Louis Southwestern Railroad, also known as "the Cotton Belt." Finally, in 1997, it joined the Union Pacific Railroad.
