Patrick Demarchelier's Early Life
Patrick Demarchelier was born near Paris, France, in 1943. He grew up in Le Havre, a city in Normandy. He lived there with his mother and four brothers. When he turned seventeen, his stepfather gave him his first camera. It was an Eastman Kodak camera. Patrick quickly learned how to use it. He taught himself to develop film and fix photos. Soon, he started taking pictures of his friends and family. He also photographed weddings.
Becoming a Fashion Photographer
In 1975, Patrick Demarchelier moved from Paris to New York City. He went there to be with his girlfriend. In New York, he discovered the world of fashion photography. He was the main photographer for a book called On Your Own. This book was a beauty and lifestyle guide for young women. It was written by Brooke Shields.
