Patwin (also called Patween) is a special language from Northern California. It is part of the Wintuan language family. Sadly, very few people speak Patwin today. As of 2021, only one person was known to speak it as their first language.
But there's good news! People are working hard to bring the Patwin language back. Since 2010, classes have been taught at the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation tribal school. This helps new generations learn and use the language.

Patwin Language Dialects
The Patwin language has different ways of being spoken, called dialects. Think of them like different accents or versions of the same language.
- River Patwin (or Valley Patwin) was spoken by people living near the Sacramento River in Colusa County.
- Hill Patwin was spoken by people in the plains and hills to the west.
There was also something called Southern Patwin. This dialect disappeared a long time ago, shortly after people from other parts of the world came to California. We don't have much information about it. Some experts even think it might have been a completely separate language.
Learning and Culture
The Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation is doing a lot to keep the Patwin culture and language alive. Their Tewe Kewe Cultural Center is a great place for this.
As of 2012, the center has a special library collection. It's full of books and materials about California's Native American cultures. They also have a large section just for researching the Patwin language and its history. This helps students and adults learn more about their heritage.
Sounds of Patwin
Every language has its own unique sounds. Patwin has a set of sounds that make it special.
Patwin Consonants
Patwin uses 25 different consonant sounds. Consonants are sounds made by blocking air in your mouth, like 'p', 't', or 'k'. Some Patwin consonants are like English ones, while others are different. For example, some sounds are made with a puff of air (like 'pʰ'), and some are made with a quick stop in the throat (like 'kʼ').
Patwin Vowels
Patwin has 10 different vowel sounds. Vowels are sounds made with an open mouth, like 'a', 'e', 'i', 'o', 'u'. In Patwin, vowels can be short or long. This means holding the sound for a shorter or longer time. For example, the 'a' sound can be short, or it can be long, like 'aː'.
