Paul S. Otellini grew up in San Francisco, California, in the United States. His family came from Italy. He went to St. Ignatius College Preparatory for high school.

After high school, he studied economics at the University of San Francisco. He earned his bachelor's degree there in 1972. Later, in 1974, he got his MBA from the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. An MBA is a special degree for people who want to work in business management.

Paul Otellini's Career at Intel

Paul Otellini started working at Intel in 1974. Intel is a company famous for making computer microprocessors and other parts.

Leading Intel's Computer Parts

From 1998 to 2002, Paul Otellini was an executive vice president and general manager. He was in charge of the Intel Architecture Group. This meant he was responsible for Intel's main products like microprocessors and chipsets. These parts are like the "brains" of computers, used in desktops, laptops, and larger computer systems.

Before that, he held other important roles. From 1996 to 1998, he was in charge of sales and marketing. He also led the team that introduced the Pentium microprocessor in 1993. The Pentium was a very popular computer chip. He also managed Intel's business with IBM.

Becoming a Leader at Intel

He played a key role in convincing Apple Inc. to start using Intel processors in their Mac computers. This was a major change for Apple. He also liked Mac OS X, Apple's operating system. He once said that Microsoft's Windows Vista was "closer to the Mac" in its design.

In 2006, Intel made some big changes to save money. Paul Otellini oversaw a plan to reduce costs by $3 billion per year by 2008. This included letting go of about 10,500 employees, which was about 10% of Intel's workforce at the time. These job cuts happened in manufacturing and product design.

In 2007, he announced plans for Intel to build a large $3 billion factory in Dalian, China. This factory would make semiconductor chips.

Paul Otellini announced his plan to retire in November 2012. He officially retired in May 2013. After he left, Brian Krzanich became the new CEO of Intel.
