Pawn was a small, historic community in Lane County, Oregon. It was not a city or town with its own government. Instead, it was an unincorporated community.

Pawn was located where two streams, Sam Creek and West Branch, meet. These streams form the beginning of the North Fork Siuslaw River. This area is part of the Siuslaw National Forest in the Central Oregon Coast Range. Further down the river, you would find the community of Minerva. Even further, near where the river meets the ocean, is the city of Florence.

What Was Pawn?

Pawn was a small settlement that no longer exists as an active community. It was once a place where people lived and worked. Its location was important for its early residents.

A Community's History

Even though Pawn was small, it had important services for its residents. These included a post office and a school.

The Post Office Story

Pawn had its own post office from 1915 to 1933. This was how people sent and received mail. The name "Pawn" was created in a unique way. Four local residents combined the first letter of their last names: Poole, Ackerley, Worthington, and Nolen.

Monroe Poole was the very first postmaster. Mail often arrived in Pawn by horse or wagon. Sometimes, it was even transferred from a boat further down the river.

Learning in Pawn

Before good roads connected Pawn to Florence, the community had its own school. Children in grades 1 through 8 attended this local school. If older children wanted to go to high school, they had to live in Florence.

Exploring Pawn Trail

Today, you can find a forest trail named after the old community. The Pawn Trail is managed by the United States Forest Service. It's a great place to explore nature.

This trail is about 4,000 feet (1,219 meters) long. It forms a loop through an old-growth forest, which means it has very old trees. The trail is open all year round. It is located about 18 miles (29 kilometers) from Florence. Most of the journey to the trail is on forest roads.
