Paxton Pits is a wonderful nature reserve located near St Neots in Cambridgeshire, England. It used to be an area where people dug up gravel, but now it's a beautiful home for lots of different plants and animals. This reserve covers 77 hectares (that's about 190 acres!) of lakes, meadows, woodlands, and grassy areas. It's a fantastic place to explore and enjoy nature all year round.

Discover Paxton Pits Nature Reserve

Paxton Pits was once a busy site where gravel was extracted from the ground. Over time, these old gravel pits filled with water, creating lakes and ponds. Instead of leaving them as they were, people decided to turn them into a thriving nature reserve. This means the area is now protected and managed to help wildlife grow and flourish. It's a great example of how old industrial sites can be transformed into valuable natural spaces.

Amazing Wildlife at the Pits

Paxton Pits is famous for its incredible wildlife. You can spot many different kinds of birds, especially Nightingales and Cormorants. But there's much more to see! The reserve is home to a wide variety of other birds, from tiny Wrens to large Herons.

You'll also find many fascinating insects, like colorful Dragonflys darting over the water. Mammals, such as Foxes and Badgers, live hidden in the woodlands. And don't forget the amazing plants, or "flora," that grow here, especially the beautiful wildflowers in spring and summer. Every visit offers a chance to discover something new!

Explore the Trails!

Paxton Pits has several marked walking routes that are perfect for exploring. You can choose a path that suits your adventure!

The Heron Trail

The Heron Trail is a circular path about 2 miles (3.2 km) long. The first mile of this trail is a hard, smooth surface. This makes it great for wheelchairs, pushchairs, and walking in all kinds of weather. As you follow the Heron Trail, you'll walk past sparkling lakes, through peaceful woodlands, and along the river bank. There are also three special bird hides along the way. These hides are perfect spots to quietly watch the many water birds without disturbing them.

The Meadow Trail

The Meadow Trail is another circular route, about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) long. This trail takes you through lovely meadows and around more lakes. It's an especially good trail to walk in spring and summer. That's when you'll see lots of beautiful wildflowers blooming and many dragonflies buzzing around on sunny days. Just a heads-up: some parts of this trail can get quite muddy in winter or after a lot of rain, so wear appropriate shoes!
