The Peabody River is a river in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, United States. It is about 12.9 miles (20.8 km) long. This river is a tributary (a smaller stream that flows into a larger one) of the Androscoggin River. The Androscoggin River then flows into Maine and joins the Kennebec River near the Atlantic Ocean.

Discover the Peabody River

The Peabody River is an important waterway in the beautiful White Mountains. It helps carry water from the mountains down to the larger rivers.

Where Does the River Start?

The Peabody River begins in a place called Pinkham Notch. This is on the eastern side of Mount Washington. Mount Washington is the tallest mountain in the northeastern United States.

Journey to the Androscoggin

From its start, the river flows mostly northeast. It travels all the way to the town of Gorham, New Hampshire. Here, it meets the Androscoggin River. Along its journey, many smaller streams join the Peabody River. These streams come from the Presidential Range to the west and the Carter-Moriah Range to the east.

Meeting Other Streams

The most important stream that joins the Peabody River is the West Branch. This branch flows out of a huge, deep valley called Great Gulf. Great Gulf was carved out by glaciers long ago. It is surrounded by the tall peaks of the Presidential Range.

A Scenic Drive

If you ever visit the area, you'll find that New Hampshire Route 16 follows the Peabody River. This road runs alongside the river for most of its length. It offers a scenic drive through the White Mountains.
