Patrick "Pecker" Dunne (born April 1, 1933 – died December 19, 2012) was a very talented Irish musician. He was also known as a "seanchaí," which means he was a traditional storyteller. Pecker Dunne was famous for his amazing banjo playing. He could also play the fiddle, melodeon, and guitar very well.
Pecker Dunne's Early Life
Pecker Dunne was born in Castlebar, County Mayo, Ireland. His family were Irish Travellers. They were originally from County Wexford. Pecker's father was also a fiddle player. Pecker later lived in Drimnagh, a suburb of Dublin. He grew up to be one of Ireland's most noted banjo players. He was considered one of the best Traveller musicians.
Music and Performances
Pecker Dunne became well-known in Ireland. He often played music on the streets, which is called busking. He frequently busked at GAA sporting events. These events were especially popular in the Munster region.
Later, Pecker Dunne performed in many other countries. He played music in England and France. He also traveled to Australia and New York City. In New York, he performed with a famous Irish band called The Dubliners. Pecker also appeared in a film. He was in the 1996 movie Trojan Eddie. He acted alongside Richard Harris and Stephen Rea.
Later Years and Legacy
Pecker Dunne lived in Killimer, County Clare, Ireland. He lived there with his wife and their four children. He passed away on December 19, 2012, when he was 79 years old. Pecker Dunne is buried in Burrane, which is near Killimer. His music and stories continue to be remembered.
