Peder started his art education at just nine years old. The next year, he joined Copenhagen's Technical Institute. By the age of 19, in 1870, Krøyer finished his studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Art. There, he learned from the artist Frederik Vermehren. Krøyer first showed his paintings to the public in 1871 at Charlottenborg Palace. One of his first works was a portrait of his friend, the painter Frans Schwartz [da]. He continued to show his art there throughout his life.

In 1874, a man named Heinrich Hirschsprung bought Krøyer's first painting. Hirschsprung became a very important supporter of Krøyer's art for many years. His collection of art later became the basis for the Hirschsprung Museum in Copenhagen.

From 1877 to 1881, Krøyer traveled a lot around Europe. He met other artists, studied different art styles, and improved his own skills. He spent time in Paris and studied with Léon Bonnat. During this time, he was influenced by famous Impressionist painters like Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. He kept traveling throughout his life, always finding new ideas from artists and cultures in other countries.

In 1882, Krøyer returned to Denmark. He spent several months in Skagen, which was a small fishing village at the very top of Denmark. He loved painting scenes from the local life there. He also painted the artists who lived in Skagen. This village became very important to him and his art.

Other artists and writers who were part of the Skagen art scene included Holger Drachmann, Georg Brandes, Henrik Pontoppidan, Michael Ancher, and Anna Ancher. Krøyer often spent his summers in Skagen. During the winters, he lived in Copenhagen, where he worked on larger portraits that people had asked him to paint. He also continued to travel outside Denmark.

Family Life and Challenges

On a trip to Paris in 1888, Krøyer met Marie Martha Mathilde Triepcke again. He had known her in Copenhagen. They fell in love quickly and got married on July 23, 1889. Marie Krøyer was also a painter and became part of the Skagen art community. She often appeared in Krøyer's paintings after they were married. They had one daughter named Vibeke, who was born in 1895. Later, Peder and Marie decided to separate.

In the last ten years of his life, Krøyer's eyesight slowly got worse, until he became completely blind. But he was always positive and kept painting almost until the very end, even with his health problems. He even joked that his one working eye became better after he lost sight in the other.

Peder Severin Krøyer passed away in 1909 in Skagen at 58 years old. He had faced health challenges for many years.
