Pedro Almíndez Chirino was a Spanish conquistador (explorer and soldier). He was born in Úbeda, a town in Spain. Pedro Almíndez Chirino was part of several groups that governed New Spain. New Spain was a large Spanish colony that included much of present-day Mexico.
He helped lead the government when Hernán Cortés, a famous Spanish explorer, was away. This happened between 1525 and 1526. Pedro Almíndez Chirino worked closely with another leader named Gonzalo de Salazar during this time.
Exploring New Lands
In 1530, Pedro Almíndez Chirino was sent on an important mission. He was sent by Nuño Beltrán de Guzmán, another Spanish leader. His job was to explore new areas in what is now Mexico. These areas include the states of Jalisco, Aguascalientes, Zacatecas, and Sinaloa.
His main goals were to find valuable metals like gold and silver. He also aimed to expand Spanish control over these lands. He traveled with about 50 Spanish soldiers. They were joined by 500 local allies from the Purépecha and Tlaxcaltec groups.
Journey Through Jalisco
In March 1530, Pedro Almíndez Chirino and his group passed through Lagos de Moreno, a town in Jalisco. Their meeting with the local people there was peaceful.
Encounters in Sinaloa
Later, in 1531, his journey took him to Mocorito in Sinaloa. The local people there, who spoke the Cahita language, called this place "Mocorito." This name means "the place of the dead." It was given this name because of difficult events that happened when Pedro Almíndez Chirino was in the area.
