Pedro Lamy's Racing Journey
Starting His Career
Pedro Lamy was born in Aldeia Galega da Merceana, Portugal. He started his racing journey in karting. In 1989, at just 17 years old, he won the Portuguese Formula Ford Championship in his very first year!
He then moved on to Formula Opel Lotus. In 1991, on his second try, he won that championship too. After that, Lamy went to Germany to race in Formula Three. In 1992, he won the German Formula Three Championship. He also won the important Marlboro Masters race in Zandvoort. In 1993, he raced in International Formula 3000 and finished second overall. He even won a race at the challenging Pau Grand Prix street course.
Racing in Formula One
Joining Lotus (1993–1994)
In 1993, Pedro Lamy got a big chance to race in Formula One. He joined the Lotus team for the last four races of the season. He was replacing another driver who was injured. He didn't score any points that year, but Lotus signed him for the full 1994 season.
However, after only four races in 1994, Lamy had a very serious crash during a test at Silverstone Circuit. He broke both his legs and wrists. This meant he couldn't race for over a year while he recovered.
Driving for Minardi (1995–1996)
After a lot of hard work to recover, Lamy returned to Formula One in the second half of the 1995 season. He joined the Minardi team. In the 1995 Australian Grand Prix in Adelaide, he made history! He scored the team's only point of the season. This made him the first Portuguese driver ever to score a point in a Formula One World Championship race.
Lamy stayed with Minardi for the 1996 season. But the team didn't have a lot of money to improve their car. This made it hard to compete. After 32 Grand Prix races, Pedro Lamy finished his Formula One career.
Sports Car Racing Success
After Formula One, Pedro Lamy moved to sports car racing. He had a lot of success there!
- In 1998, he won the GT2 class in the FIA GT Championship with an Oreca Chrysler Viper GTS-R.

- Lamy won the 24 Hours Nürburgring race twice in a row, in 2001 and 2002. He won it again in 2004 and 2010, making it five wins in total! This tied him for the most wins ever at that race.
- In 2003, he won the V8Star Series championship.
- In 2004, he won the GTS class in the Le Mans Endurance Series.
- In 2007, Lamy became a factory driver for Peugeot and won the LMP1 championship in the Le Mans Series.
