Who was Pedro Téllez-Girón?
Pedro Téllez-Girón was born into a powerful family in Spain. His father was Pedro Zoilo Téllez Girón y de Guzmán, the 8th Duke of Osuna. His mother was María Vicenta de la Portería Pacheco Téllez-Girón.
In 1772, when he was about 17 years old, Pedro married María Josefa Pimentel. She was also from a very important noble family. She held many titles, including Countess of Benavente and Duchess of Béjar. Her family's lands and titles became part of the Osuna family's wealth.
Pedro's Military Career
Pedro Téllez-Girón was a military commander. He led Spanish troops during the War of the Pyrenees. This war started on March 7, 1793, and ended on July 22, 1795.
Early Battles in the Pyrenees
As a Lieutenant General, Pedro commanded a group of soldiers. They fought under a higher-ranking general named Antonio Ricardos. One of their first battles was the Battle of Mas Deu. This fight happened in the eastern Pyrenees mountains on May 19, 1793.
Soon after this battle, Pedro moved to a different part of the army. He then fought in the western Pyrenees.
In the autumn of 1794, Pedro was put in charge of defending Navarre. This was an important region in northern Spain. The French army, led by General Bon-Adrien Jeannot de Moncey, attacked his troops.
Pedro's soldiers were greatly outnumbered in the Battle of Orbaitzeta in October 1794. Even though they were defeated, Pedro managed to stop the French from capturing the city of Pamplona. This was a very important city to protect.
Famous Portraits of the Duke
The famous Spanish artist Francisco Goya painted several portraits of the Duke of Osuna and his family.
What the Portraits Show
In one well-known painting, Goya shows the Duke without any medals. The background is dark and simple. The only sign that he was a military leader is the baton he holds in his hand.
One of Pedro's children, Joaquina Téllez-Girón, Marchioness of Santa Cruz, was also painted by Goya. Another child from Goya's family portrait was Pedro de Álcantara Téllez-Girón y Pimentel. He later became the Prince of Anglona. He also served as the Captain General of Cuba for a time.
