In 2020, about 789 people lived in Peggs. Many residents are Native American. They belong to different tribal groups, including the Cherokee Nation and the Muscogee Creek Nation.

History of Peggs

The post office in Peggs opened on December 6, 1899. The community was named after Thomas Pegg. He was an important leader of the Cherokee Nation during the Civil War.

Tornadoes in Peggs

A very strong tornado hit Peggs on May 2, 1920. It caused a lot of damage and sadly, 71 people lost their lives. This was about 30 percent of everyone living in Peggs at that time. It was one of the deadliest tornadoes in Oklahoma's history.

In May 2019, another tornado struck Peggs. This tornado was not as strong. It caused damage to some homes and businesses, but no one was killed.

Where is Peggs Located?

Peggs is in the northwestern part of Cherokee County. It is located along Oklahoma State Highway 82. This highway connects Peggs to other towns.

You can drive about 15 miles (24 km) southeast to Tahlequah. Tahlequah is the main town, or county seat, of Cherokee County. You can also drive about 10 miles (16 km) northwest to Locust Grove. This town is in Mayes County.

The total area of Peggs is about 15.3 square miles (39.7 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
