Hulbert is a town in Cherokee County, Oklahoma, in the United States. It was named after Ben H. Hulbert, an important Cherokee man.

In 2020, about 483 people lived in Hulbert. This was a change from 590 people in 2010. Hulbert is also home to a special place called Our Lady of the Annunciation of Clear Creek Monastery. This is a Benedictine monastery that has become an abbey. It has connections to other famous abbeys in France.

History of Hulbert

Early Beginnings of the Town

The first buildings in the Hulbert area were a store and a grist mill. These were built in 1890 between the towns of Wagoner and Tahlequah. A local story says that a trapper from Kentucky, named Benjamin Hulbert, married a Cherokee woman. He then built a store on her land.

Growth and Relocation

A small community started to grow around this store. Later, in the early 1900s, the community moved. It relocated to its current spot to be closer to the nearest railroad. This made it easier for people and goods to travel.

Becoming an Official Town

A post office opened in Hulbert on May 4, 1903. The town of Hulbert officially became a town on January 18, 1965. It was later recognized as a city in 1996.

Location and Nearby Areas

Hulbert is located in the western part of Cherokee County. Oklahoma State Highway 51 runs right through the town. If you go east on this highway, you will reach Tahlequah, which is about 10 miles away. Tahlequah is the main town, or county seat, for Cherokee County.

Travel and Natural Features

If you travel west on Highway 51, you will reach Wagoner, about 14 miles away. Also, Fort Gibson Lake is about 7 miles west of Hulbert on Highway 51. This lake is part of the Neosho River.
