Discovering Pelhams Lands
Pelhams Lands is a quiet, rural spot in the Boston district. It's known for its history and old buildings. This area offers a glimpse into how land was used and managed long ago in England.
How Pelhams Lands Got Its Name
The name 'Pelhams Lands' comes from the Pelham family. They owned land here starting in 1602. A famous member, Sir William Pelham, even had a special factory here. This factory was a woad mill, which made blue dye from a plant called woad.
The land itself was created after a big project to drain the Holland Fen. This was a large marshy area. The drainage happened because of a special law passed by the government in 1776.
Changes in Local Government
Pelhams Lands was once an "extra-parochial tract." This means it was an area not officially part of any parish. In 1858, it became its own separate civil parish. A civil parish is a local area with its own council.
However, on April 1, 1987, the Pelhams Lands parish was combined with another area. It joined with Brothertoft to form the new parish of Holland Fen with Brothertoft.
Population Over Time
The number of people living in Pelhams Lands has always been quite small.
- In 1831, only 41 people lived there.
- The population grew to 55 by 1851, which was its highest point in the 1800s.
- By 1971, the population had reached 64 people.
Historic Buildings of Pelhams Lands
Pelhams Lands is home to some interesting old buildings. These structures show what life was like centuries ago.
Pelhams Lands Farmhouse
The main building is Pelhams Lands Farm. This farmhouse was built in the late 1700s. It is made of red brick and has a special status. It is a Grade II listed building. This means it is an important historic building that must be protected.
Other Farm Buildings
There are two more buildings at Pelhams Lands Farm that are also Grade II listed. They were also built in the 1700s. One is a stable, which is a building for horses, with a granary, where grain was stored. The other is an old earth closet, which was a type of outdoor toilet.
The Pelhams Lands Windmill
Pelhams Lands once had a tall tower windmill. It was built in 1838. This new mill replaced an older one called a post mill that had been blown down by strong winds.
The tower windmill worked for many years. But in 1926, it lost its top part, called the cap. After that, it was no longer powered by wind. Instead, an engine was used to make it work. Today, most of the windmill is gone. Only a single ruined section remains.
