Penacook is a small community located within the city of Concord in New Hampshire, United States. It's found in Merrimack County. Penacook sits right on Concord's northern edge, next to Boscawen.
The name "Penacook" comes from the Pennacook tribe. These Indigenous people lived in the area a long time ago. The original settlement here was even called "Pennycook."
Penacook is special because of the Contoocook River. This river drops about 100 feet in just over a mile before it joins the Merrimack River. This big drop in the river made it a great spot for early factories. These factories used the river's power to run their machines. That's why Penacook grew into a "mill town," a place with many factories.
Today, dams on the river still make electricity. However, most of the old factories, like Allied Leather, are now closed.
Penacook has its own phone exchange (753) and its own ZIP Code (03303). This ZIP Code is also used by parts of Boscawen and Webster. Most students in Penacook go to schools in the Merrimack Valley School District. But some parts of Penacook are in the Concord School District.
