History of Peninsula
Peninsula was first settled in 1818. It was officially planned out in 1837 by a man named Herman Bronson. The village was an important stop for canal boats. These boats traveled on man-made waterways.
Peninsula was also home to several mills, where things like grain were ground. There were stone quarries, where rocks were dug out of the ground. Boat yards were places where boats were built or repaired. For a time, the village had five hotels and 14 bars. This busy period lasted until 1887.

More than 20 places in Peninsula are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are important historical sites. Many buildings show the Greek Revival architecture style. This style was popular with settlers who came from New England to the Connecticut Western Reserve.
The Gothic Revival Bronson Memorial Church was first built in 1835. It was known as the Bethel Church. It was meant to bring good behavior and religion to the canal boatmen. In 1889, the church was updated in the Gothic Revival style.
A great example of Greek Revival style is the 1824 Bronson House. It was built using sandstone blocks from local quarries. Many canal-era houses are built in a style called "Upright-and-Wing." This style was common in early 19th-century Ohio.
Other building styles you can see include Gothic Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, Stick, and Colonial Revival. The Boston Township Hall was built in 1886 in the Stick style. It was first used as the village high school. This three-story building has a tower with a bell. Today, the Township Hall is the Cuyahoga Valley Historical Museum.
