Pennsylvania State University, often called Penn State, is a large college in the state of Pennsylvania. Its main campus is in University Park, Pennsylvania. Penn State also has many other campuses across the state.
The university started in 1855. In 1863, the Pennsylvania state government chose Penn State to be its only land-grant college. This means it gets special support to teach, do research, and help the public. Penn State teaches students of all levels, from those just starting college to those getting advanced degrees. You can learn in classrooms or online.
Penn State's main campus is one of the largest universities in the United States. Over 44,000 students attend the University Park campus each year. The university is also known for having the world's biggest group of former students who pay dues.
In 2009–10, about 94,300 students were enrolled across all 24 campuses and through its online World Campus. Penn State offers more than 160 different study programs. The university also has a large amount of money set aside, called an endowment, to support its programs.
Penn State is very famous for its football team, the Nittany Lions. Its sports teams play in the Big Ten Conference.
How Penn State is Run
Penn State is a "state-related" university. This means it gets some money from the state of Pennsylvania. The state also helps choose 10 out of the 32 people on its board of trustees. Even though it gets state support, Penn State runs itself and is not directly controlled by the state government.
The board of trustees chooses the university's president. The president is in charge of running the university every day. However, the president shares power with other leaders, teachers, and students. For example, Rodney Erickson became the temporary president in 2011.
The executive vice president and provost is the main academic leader of the university. This person makes sure all the teaching and learning programs are working well.
Penn State Sports Teams
Penn State's sports teams are called the Nittany Lions. The women's basketball team is known as the Lady Lions. Most of Penn State's teams compete in the Big Ten Conference.
However, some teams play in different conferences because the Big Ten doesn't offer their sport. For example, the women's ice hockey team plays in College Hockey America. The men's volleyball team plays in the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association.
